Critical Dialogues: Rashaad Newsome

Rashaad Newsome’s works dismantles power structures one shiny block at a time. Using the equalizing force of sampling, he crafts compositions that frequently surprise in their associative potential and walk the tightrope between identity politics and abstraction.  Rashaad Newsome was born in New Orleans, Louisiana where he received a B.A. in Art History at Tulane University before studying Film at Film Video Arts in New York City.  Newsome has exhibited nationally and internationally at such creditable institutions and galleries as: The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; PS1MoMA, New York, NY; Glassbox Gallery, Paris, France and ar/ge Kunst Galerie Museum, Bolzano, Italy.  Recent awards include: 2010 The Urban Artist Initiative individual Artist Grant, UAI, New York, NY; 2009 Rema Hort Mann Foundation, Visual Arts Grant, New York, NY and 2009 BAC Community Arts Regrant, New York, NY.

Valley Dwellers by Matt Kalasky; ONE NIGHT ONLY: Tuesday November 23

(VALLEY DWELLERS is a play in three acts based on the recent lives of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, the stars of MTV’s reality hit The Hills.)
“As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I take a look at my life and realize there's nothing left.”
The uncanny valley is a site of misfortune, a purgatory den where robots and CG animations fall desperately short. The population here is nearly human but completely and unfathomably monstrous. It is within this landscape that we find Heidi and Spencer. They are adventurers that explore with zeal and determination.
But their quest will not be easy.
Along the way they will encounter the hardships of a reality long abandoned and the condemnation of close friends.
But they are not alone.
You will be there to help these stars of reality find their constellation, find each other, and find out what matters most. This is a play in three acts that will chronicle an odyssey mired in disaster but breaching a horizon of discovery, hope, and acceptance.
The valley dwellers cometh, be there for them.
