Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art is proud to present Famous Last Words
, a solo exhibition of installation, video and works on paper by James Rosenthal.
Famous Last Words is comprised of images and objects, emblazoned with phrases that mock and revere art, rock, and art rock sub-cultural tropes. Intentionally ambiguous, Rosenthal’s text stops short of narrative. Instead, his idioms reside between incoherence and anthemic callings.
‘Christian Markley Be Damned!’ an installation of vinyl LP’s, mirrors, and various light sources strategically covered in text, is a mournfully tongue in cheek shrine to musical subcultures. Rosenthal’s menagerie of floor situated, thrift store relics inscribed with his witty and disjointed laments confront the persistent continuation of history. Rosenthal’s text seems to hover between epitaph and consolement, bemoaning objects having become antiques.
James Rosenthal is an artist, critic, and professor of art. He has had numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally. James Rosenthal lives and works in Philadelphia.
Famous Last Words opens on Thursday, October 2. A private view with the artist will be held on Thursday, October 9 from 6 to 9 pm. The exhibition features works on paper, video and installation. The show closes on Saturday, November 1, 2008.
