AJF is accepting applications for its 2009 Emerging Artist Award. The amount of this year’s award is $5,000. This is the 9th year that AJF has awarded a contemporary jewelry artist a cash award.
The purpose of the award is to acknowledge promise, innovation, and individuality in the work of an emerging jewelry artist and to help to advance the artist’s career. The competition is open to makers of wearable art jewelry who: have completed their academic/professional training, have been out of school for one year or more, and have not had a solo artist exhibition in a commercial gallery or museum. Submitted work must have been unsupervised if from an academic setting.
Jurors for the 2009 competition are: Ursula Neuman, jewelry curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Gail Hufjay, long-standing member of AJF and a collector of contemporary jewelry; and Masumi Kataoka, jewelry artist and recipient of the AJF’s 2008 Award.

Contemporary art museum director seeks reliable art administrator, art historian, or artist for year-round position to be split between beautiful nature preserve in Chester County, PA and Acadia National Park in Maine. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: office work (arts administration, computer work and trouble-shooting, correspondence, etc...), publication research and assistance, art handling and collections management. Knowledge of digital photography, video, computer technology, and ITS necessary. Ability to use Photoshop and Final Cut Pro a plus. Restaurant or events experience especially beneficial for the three artist dinners and lectures held each week during summer months.

Friends,
In light of last week’s Junto discussion surrounding art criticism in Philadelphia Libby and Roberta have graciously offered me a place on the artblog to gather, edit, and post theoretical writing. I am not an art historian, just an enthusiastic and interested member of the community looking to improve the level of art discourse in our city (and beyond). If the publishers, magazines, and schools are not generating satisfactory pieces of contemporary art philosophy, we will do it ourselves. My hope is that academic discourse can find a foothold along side this vast archive of reviews.
This is an open invitation for ongoing submissions of essays, theses, interviews, and conversations regarding the themes relevant to work currently being created and shown. The goal is to create context. We can better define the space we occupy in the larger art world and develop a vocabulary with which we can discuss each other’s work, advancing our practice.
These thoughts will be held in a new category on the blog called “theoretically,” operating as an autonomous subset of the blog’s content. With the support of contributions and commentary we can theoretically make some progress toward an illuminated Philadelphia.

THE WHO? Fine artists working in two or three dimensions, or in digital and video mediums. The only limitation is that they must work (create) within a 250-mile radius of Richmond. This includes Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Washington DC, Baltimore, and everywhere in between. If you aren't sure if you fall within the target area, check the map on the front of the prospectus to find out.
THE WHEN? The show will run June 26 through August 23, 2009. Postmark and online deadline for submissions is 11:59PM Friday, May 15, 2009.
THE WHERE? The show will occupy all 3,000 square feet of artspace gallery in Plant Zero, a renovated industrial building in Richmond's Manchester Arts District.
PRIZES. PRIZES UP TO $1000 and a solo exhibition in artspace's Helena Davis Gallery will be awarded at the discretion of Ms. Rothacker.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS. Up to 3 digital images on CD at 72 ppi and 800 pixels for the longest dimension, or up to 3 minutes for moving images on DVD. Label digital images and DVD with last name, first initial, and entry number (e.g. SmithJ1). Video entries require own equipment. Installation work is limited to a height of 10', where main entrance to artspace is 8'X8'.
Mail or hand-deliver images on CD, video DVD, completed entry form, entry fee, and SASE (for return of CD or DVD and notification) to artspace, Zero E. 4th Street, Richmond, Virginia 23224, postmarked by Friday, May 15, 2009. If no SASE provided, notification will be sent by e-mail.
ONLINE SUBMISSIONS: In the body of an e-mail, include your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. In this e-mail provide information for the images you wish to submit. The University of Mary Washington Galleries is sponsoring a biennial competitive painting exhibition, opening January 2010. Deadline June 1, 2009. $2,000 in awards. Juror: William Dunlap, artist, critic, educator. All artists living in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to enter. Gimme Shelter is the culmination of a semester-long animal shelter building project for several classes of sculpture students at Moore College of Art & Design, in which they built birdhouses, bat houses, sculpture houses, and shelter-inspired wearables. The full proceeds from the sale of these objects will go directly to Women Against Abuse. Work will be sensibly priced, from $10. The women of Moore who lovingly created these sculptures hope that you will be able to take time out of your busy Friday to visit the park, see some art, and perhaps help a good cause by buying a birdhouse (or other shelter) that you adore.

MARY JO BOLE: PURGE INCOMPLETEThis installation details the fascinating history of plumbing at Eastern State Penitentiary, a building that had running water before the White House. Ms. Bole’s installation includes sculptural elements in resin, frosted glass, and brass that are recreations of architect John Haviland’s original plumbing schematics.
